Extending EUMETCast and GEONETCast

What is EUMETCast? And GEONETCast?

EUMETCast is a multi-service satellite broadcasting system for environmental data and information products, operated by EUMETSAT. It reliably shares weather, climate and environmental data across Europe, Africa and the Americas, at low cost to the receiver.

At the same time, EUMETCast is one of the 3 main components of the global GEONETCast infrastructure, an early achievement of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems. GEONETCast combines EUMETCast with GEONETCast-Americas operated by NOAA and FengYunCast operated by the Chinese Meteorological Agency, referred to as GEONETCast Networking Centres (GNC), to provide near-global dissemination.

How does DevCoCast contribute to the EUMETCast and GEONETCast infrastructure?

To promote further expansion of EUMETCast and GEONETCast in and towards Developing Countries,
DevCoCast sets up

Why do organizations in Africa, Latin America and Asia need GEONETCast? And why could it be useful for YOU?

These broadcasting systems are in particular useful in Developing Countries, where funds may be insufficient to provide a sufficient internet capacity to download the high volume of Earth Observation products. Other advantages are:

  • the availability of low cost, off-the-shelf receiver equipment
  • the high reliability and data transfer rate
  • the wide variety of freely available products, as can be verified in EUMETSAT′s Product Navigator
  • the long-term commitment to maintain the infrastructure, in particular in Africa
  • the constantly growing receiver network and the growing number of providers and products
The long-term commitment and effectiveness of EUMETCast are evident from:
  • the EDF-funded Preparation for Use of MSG in Africa (PUMA) project, that introduced EUMETCast in the national meteo services of 53 African countries
  • the VGT4Africa research project, financed under the European Community′s 6th Framework Programme, that showed EUMETCast′s value for vegetation, agriculture and general environmental monitoring, also outside of the meteorological services (see the Final Report for more details)
  • the on-going EDF-funded African Monitoring of the Environment for Sustainable Development (AMESD) initiative, that maintains and extends the EUMETCast infrastructure from PUMA and uses it in 5 thematic areas across the African continent
  • the planned continuation of PUMA and AMESD in the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security in Africa and ACP countries (GMES Africa) initiative, the extension of Europe′s GMES to African and ACP countries
  • live demonstrations at various events and of course, the real-life applications.
